Eyebrows have come a long way. Let’s reflect for two seconds and happily mourn that thin parentheses eyebrows are a thing of the past now...if you don’t know what I’m talking about...just google Lily Van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl and you’ll see what I mean. Praise the greatness of Lily Collins and Cara Delevingne’s eyebrows!! They’re full, shapely, and make a statement. Thankfully I fall into the latter category, even if it means I regularly have to maintain them.
I’d rather wax and tweeze my brows over drawing on fake ones any day. The best compliment I’ve ever received about them was from a woman I ran into one day at work. She told me my eyebrows almost looked fake because they were so perfect. Sis, I was flooded with flattery! Thank you!
So what does that mean for brow products I actually own and use? Yeah, I’m on the low maintenance side but I’ve still got Anastasia and Benefit products hiding out in my collection! I usually keep it simple by brushing up and through them with a spoolie, maybe fill a little towards the front and the tail, then set with either a tinted or clear brow gel. It’s fine because I spend more time elsewhere on my face.
From experience, Anastasia has the best shade selection for brow pencils and pomades, hands down. I’ve worked through a whole Brow Wiz, the finer tipped pencil, but I haven’t replaced it and nor do I plan to. I usually reach for the other Anastasia bestseller, Brow Definer, which is more angled and thicker than Brow Wiz, or Tanya Burr’s Selfie Sculpt eyebrow pencil that’s similar in style but the fluidity is crap. I’ve tried Hourglass’ Arch Brow Sculpting pencil too because of my friend, Indi’s, high praise and I see what she means in terms of its high quality and easy fluidity.
I’ve only ever needed a pomade-like product when my brow lady took off too much of the ends and I needed to build them back up. Pomades are great for nonexistent brows, creating a new brow shape, or getting that sharp “Instagram brow.” I’d typically reach for DipBrow in Medium Brown from Anastasia.
Since I’m blessed in the brow department, a brow gel is often all I need. The tint is just a bonus! Benefit’s iconic Gimme Brow was the first one I came in contact with and used for years. They finally expanded shades and the pigment and hold is still there. Boy Brow from Glossier was the first product I tried and I was pleasantly surprised by how similar it was to Benefit’s. One of my friends claims it doesn’t hold as well as the Hourglass one she uses (which is also fab by the way, the brush makes everything) but I’m indifferent since I don’t really pay attention to my brows throughout the day.
However lucky I am with my eyebrows, I’ve seen everything. Brows truly make the person and frame the face. They’re essential, kids! I’ll always keep it simple and natural, with any ol’ pencil and my beloved Anastasia Clear Brow Gel.
